Cervical Cancer
Women living with HIV have a significantly increased risk of developing cervical cancer. Given the high incidence of HIV in Mozambique, cervical cancer screening and treatment is a priority for the Ministry of Health. C-Saúde, through CDC/PEPFAR funds, supports health facilities in Zambezia Province that provide high-quality cervical cancer screening and clinical care services, including capacity to perform loop electrosurgery (LEEP) excision procedures in referral hospitals.
Support provided at the level of health facilities and community:
Allocation of Maternal and Child Health Nurses
Increasing the number of SMI nurses allocated to supported districts to provide screening services through Visual Acetic Acid Inspection (VIA).
Continuous Training and Clinical Mentoring
Use of WhatsApp groups for training and clinical mentoring of health professionals on cervical cancer screening and treatment, including cryotherapy, thermoablation and LEEP.
Supply of Equipment and Consumables
Provision of equipment for cryotherapy, thermoablation and LEEP services, and consumables for instrument sterilization.
Improvement of Hospital Infrastructure and Furniture
Supply of hospital furniture and improvement of infrastructure for cervical cancer screening and treatment services.
Participation in Technical Working Groups of the Ministry of Health
Active collaboration in technical groups on cervical cancer to develop national policies and guidelines.
