Tuberculosis

In Zambezia province, where the prevalence of HIV/TB co-infection remains high, the integration of HIV and TB services is a public health priority. The Avante Program supports health facilities in providing high-quality HIV/TB clinical services. Funded by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it seeks to control the HIV epidemic by supporting the sustainable implementation of HIV and TB services in Zambezia province. The program is implemented by Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and C-Saúde, working in partnership with the Government of Mozambique at all levels.
Support provided at the health facility and community level includes:
  1. Allocation of lay counsellors and cough officers in the TB sectors of the supported health facilities, including penitentiary health facilities.
  2. Expansion of the one-stop model for TB/HIV.
  3. Clinical Mentoring and Training on the TB Cascade conducted by district clinical advisors and regional TB assistants.
  4. Reproduction of TB logbooks, monitoring and evaluation, education and communication sheets and materials.
  5. Supply of hospital furniture, equipment and improvement of infrastructure.
  6. Participation in technical working groups of the Ministry of Health for the continuous development of national policies and guidelines.
