Pilot phase of Mozambique’s new Electronic Medical Record System begins this week

Training of technicians from the Mozambique Ministry of Health (MISAU) begins this week on the use of the Health Information System – Electronic Medical Record (SIS-RME), developed by MISAU with support from C-Saúde and funding by the Government of the United States of America.

The strategic vision of SIS-RME is to digitize all services provided in health facilities across the country, including patient reception, clinical consultations (emergency care, outpatient services, and specialized consultations), pharmacy, and laboratory services.

The first version (release) of SIS-RME was launched in early April 2026, integrating the following modules: Patient Management, General Consultation, Maternal and Child Health, HIV, Tuberculosis, Pharmacy, Settings, and Interoperability – Master Patient Index (MPI). Representatives from MISAU programs corresponding to the available modules attended the launch.

The training taking place this week, which includes a strong on-the-job component, marks the start of the system’s pilot implementation at Polana Cimento Health Centre in Maputo City. This is the first of 36 health facilities expected to be reached by SIS-RME by September 2026, with a total of 680 facilities projected by September 2027, as agreed between the Governments of Mozambique and the United States.

C-Saúde supports MISAU in the development, strengthening, and implementation of Health Information Systems through the deployment of 30 specialists, including software developers and business analysts.

This success story is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Government of the United States.
